Relaxing constraints as a conservation policy

چکیده
Eco-entrepreneurs in developing countries are often subject to market or institutional constraints such as missing markets. Conservation interventions which relax constraints may be both cost-effective and poverty reducing. A simulation using data from an intervention in Madagascar to relax the technological constraints of forest honey production investigates this possibility. Cost-effectively achieving dual environment-development goals is shown to depend on the severity of constraints, relative prices, along with the nature and effi ciency in use of technology. Success is more likely for technologies exhibiting close to constant returns to scale or high input complementarity. Forest honey does not meet these requirements. Ultimately, where market or institutional constraints are present, knowledge of the recipient technology is required for more informed, effi cient and perhaps, more politically-acceptable conservation policy.

متن کاملConvergence of MUSCL Relaxing Schemes to the Relaxed Schemes for Conservation Laws with Stiff Source Terms
We consider the convergence and stability property of MUSCL relaxing schemes applied to conservation laws with stiff source terms. The maximum principle for the numerical schemes will be established. It will be also shown that the MUSCL relaxing schemes are uniformly l and TV-stable in the sense that they are bounded by a constant independent of the relaxation parameter =, the Lipschitz constan...
متن کاملConvergence Analysis of Relaxation Schemes for Conservation Laws with Stiff Source Terms
We analyze the convergence for relaxation approximation applied to conservation laws with stiff source terms. We suppose that the source term q(u) is dissipative. Semi-implicit relaxing schemes are investigated and the corresponding stability theory is established. In particular, we proved that the numerical solution of a first-order relaxing scheme is uniformlly Z, I and TVstable, in the sense...
متن کاملThe Design of Pro-Poor Policies: How to Make Them More Effective
points z z A key policy concern in emerging-market economies is the appropriate design of policy interventions to alleviate chronic poverty. Largely missing from conventional analyses of poverty traps are the psychological mechanisms through which the experience of poverty forms the beliefs, values and aspirations of the poor. z z Pro-poor policies tend to focus on relaxing external constraints...
متن کاملConstraints to Applying Systems Thinking Concepts in Health Systems: A Regional Perspective from Surveying Stakeholders in Eastern Mediterranean Countries
Background Systems Thinking (ST) has recently been promoted as an important approach to health systems strengthening. However, ST is not common practice, particularly in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs). This paper seeks to explore the barriers that may hinder its application in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR) and possible strategies to mitigate them. Methods A survey consistin...
